Russia have signed a contract with Malaysia to continue provide support services to the Russian supplied MiG-29 combat aircraft fleet operated by Royal Malaysian Air Force.
The contract signed between RMAF and Russian MiG Corp during the MAKS 2017 Air show in Moscow, ensures Russian support to operate the MiG-29N fleet until April 2020.
Through the agreement, MiG Corp will provide maintenance services and parts supply to keep the Malaysian fleet combat ready.
This agreement was concluded on the basis of the negotiations held by both sides during the LIMA-2017 aerospace exhibition held in Malaysia.
First delivered in 1995, RMAF received 18 MiG-29s, of which 10 are currently operational in air defense role. Even though the MiG-29 fleet had a low initial acquisition cost, the fleet proved to be expensive and difficult to maintain in long run due to heavy maintenance requirements and poor supply of parts.
The new contract essentially reveal Malaysian plan to operate the fleet until at least 2020, further delaying earlier plans to retire the fleet.
