An Air France Airbus A380 Jumbo Jet en route from Paris to Los Angeles suffered an mid-air single engine failure while cruising over the Atlantic on September 30.
The uncontained engine failure happened while Flight AF66 was cruising at 37,000 feet (FL370) over Greenland.
Following the incident the aircraft was diverted to the nearby airport and made an safe emergency landing at the Goose Bay in Canada at 15:42 (GMT), approximately one and half hours after the incident.
The outer right No. 4 Engine Alliance GP72000 engine suffered the explosion, which resulted in losing the engine nose cowl and the Pratt & Whitney made Engine fan, exposing the Safran built Low Pressure Compressor.
Despite losing one of its 70,000 lb thrust engine, the redundancy of the other three engine enabled a safe landing of the aircraft, which was carrying 497 passengers.
Passengers reported a loud thud and lot of vibration following the incident.
The AF66 was flying a 9,244 km long flight which had an average flight time of 10 hours and 41 minutes from the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to Los Angeles International Airport.
