An improved version of the Turkish TAI Hurkus turboprop dual seat trainer aircraft has completed maiden flight.
The Hurkus B features an Aselsan integrated avionics system including Head Up Display (HUD), Multi-Function Displays and a Mission Computer.
The cockpit avionics layout is designed to impart flight training for F-16 and F-35 fighters.
The aircraft is 100 kg lighter than the initial version and also features winglets that the company claims to improve spin recovery of the aircraft.
The basic version Hurkus A was first flown in 2013 and had achieved EASA certification.
The B version will undergo a 90 hour flight testing before entering service.
Turkey’s Undersecretariat for Defence Industries (SSM) revealed the Hurkus B will be delivered to Turkish Air Force service from June 2018 to 2019.
The Air Force has contracted 15 aircraft to complement its 40 KAI KT-1 turboprop trainer fleet acquired from South Korea.
The Hurkus is powered by a 1,600 shp PT6A-68T Pratt & Whitney Canada turboprop engine driving a five bladed aluminum Hartzell HC-B5MA-3 propeller.
It has a Maximum Cruise Speed of 310 KCAS (574 km/h) and a maximum service ceiling of 34700 ft (10577 m) has been achieved during flight tests.
Other salient features include, 50 degree rear cockpit field of view , Hands on Throttle controls (HOTAS), pressurized cockpit and on board oxygen generating systems (OBOGS).
