A Royal Australian Air Force Boeing EA-18G Growler was badly damaged in a incident during take off from U.S. Air Force's Nellis Air Force base in Nevada.
The aircraft was taking part in a familiarization flight ahead of the Exercise Red Flag 18-1 air combat training exercise along with U.S. Air Force.
The aircraft caught fire after an rejected take off following an unknown emergency. The starboard rear fuselage section and empennage has been extensively damaged by fire, possibly due to an engine fire.
However the two RAAF pilots were able to escape unharmed without using the ejection seats.
Four RAAF EA-18G Growler aircraft and crews from Number 6 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley were deployed to Nellis AFB on their first international exercise being held from 29 January–16 February 2018.
An RAAF AP-3C Orion ASW aircraft and an E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft will also participate in Red Flag.
