Croatia has selected Israeli offer of upgraded Ex-Israeli Air Force F-16 fighters to replace Croatian Air Force aging MiG-21 fleet.
Council of Defense selected the offer and now requires formal Government ratification. The Israeli bid was favored owing to poor financial condition of the country.
Under the $517 million (420 million euro) contract, 12 upgraded multi-role F-16s will be delivered between 2020 and 2022.
The F-16 aircraft are between 25 and 30 years old and will be upgraded with Israeli avionics to fly for another 30 years.
The Israeli bid also includes two flight simulators, training of pilots and maintenance staff, and weapons for the aircraft.
Swedish Saab Gripen, US Air Force F-16 and Greek F-16 were also offered to Croatia.
CAF have 12 MiG-21 in fleet but only 4-6 are believed to operational.
