A South Korean Air Force (ROKAF) F-15K fighter jet crashed on Thursday afternoon in the North Gyeongsang Province.

The aircraft crashed into the Juhaksan mountain, while returning to Daegu airbase after completing a hour long mission.

Both pilot died in the accident.

The F-15K took off from Daegu base at 1:30 p.m. [04:30 GMT] and crashed in Chilgok county, North Gyeongsang Province, at 2:38 p.m., while returning to base, the Air Force said.


The aircraft was on its glide path to runway for landing when it crashed. Foggy and rainy weather was prevailing in the region.

It is the second crash of a ROKAF F-15K fighter since induction in to fleet in 2005.

ROKAF operates 59 of these multi-role long range strike fighters. The Boeing F-15K is heavily customized version of the F-15E wherein South Korea was responsible for 40% of production and 25% of assembly.
