Boeing says two of these Block 3 versions will be delivered to US Navy, to help pilot familiarize the updated jet and carry out carrier borne flight tests.
The test aircraft F287 is equipped with the Advanced Cockpit System, a single 10 x 19 inch touch screen display that replaces the common multi screen configuration in cockpit. The ACS enable the pilot to see, track and target multiple long range targets.
Other major upgrades for the Block 3 like the Conformal Fuel Tanks will be rolled out in a year.
The shoulder mounted low drag Conformal Fuel Tanks will enable to carry 3,500 pounds of extra fuel, extending range and increasing payload capability.
The airframe is now rated for 9000 plus hours, a 3000 hour increase based on the lessons learned from the present F/A-18 fleet's Service Life Analysis Program.
