Greece took delivery of the first Dassault Rafale fighters jet in a cermony held at Dassault Aviation Flight Test Center in Istres, France, Today.
The delivery comes successfully only after six months following the signature of the Contract for the acquisition of 18 Rafales. The contract also includes the modernization of 10 Mirage 2000 to the 2000-5 standard with involvement of Greek industries.
The order for 18 Rafale includes 12 Rafale recently in service with the French Air Force and 6 new Rafale produced at Dassault Aviation plants.
Six aircraft will be delivered this year. As per the contract, HAF Pilots and Technicians will be trained in France before deploying to TANAGRA Air Force Base.
HAF has been traditionally flying French jets. Greece ordered 40 Mirage F1 from Dassault Aviation in 1974, then 40 Mirage 2000 in 1985 and finally 15 Mirage 2000-5 in the year 2000.
Unlike the previous single engined Mirages flown by HAF, the Rafale is a twin engined highly capable and advanced four plus generation fighter jet.
