British Royal Air Force retired its two Panavia Tornado GR4 fighter bomber squadrons, Number 12 (Bomber) Squadron and 617 Squadron (the Dambusters) operating from RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland on 28 March.

The two squadrons had a long heritage of successfull operations, from World Wars I and II to Iraq, Libya and Afghanistan.

Later this year, two Eurofighter Typhoon fighter squadrons- 6 Squadron and 1(Fighter) Squadron from RAF Leuchars will be relocated to RAF Lossiemouth.

617 squadron will reform in 2018 as the RAF’s first Lockheed Martin F-35B stealth fighter squadron.

617 squadron operated the Tornado GR4 in ground attack and reconnaissance role. The squadron was nicked "Dambusters", for its dam busting operations against Germany during the Second World War.

The squadron was also deployed to Afghanistan, delivering Close Air Support for ground troops.

The retirement leaves RAF Marham as the only operational Tornado GR4 fighter base.
