DARPA has selected Boeing's Phantom Work designed micro satellite launch vehicle concept for its Airborne Launch Assist Space Access (ALASA) program.

The 11-month, $30.6-million contract includes an options to build up to 12 examples.

The program intends to cut the cost of routinely launching microsatellites into orbit by 66 percent leading to a more affordable and responsive space access.

The 7.3-meter long ALASA vehicle will be launched from Boeing F-15E fighter aircraft, once it reaches approximately 40,000 feet.

The vehicle would then fire its four main engines to deploy one or more microsatellites weighing total upto 100kg into low earth orbit (LEO).
