The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has certified the improved Pratt & Whitney PW127N turboprop engine for ATR 72-600 turboprop regional airliner.
The modified PW127N provides a 4.5 per cent power increase in Maximum Take-Off ratings (MTO), enhancing performance in hot and high operating conditions.
Field conversions from the current PW127M engine to PW127N is possible with a minor hardware modifications.
John Saabas, President of Pratt & Whitney Canada, said P&W will introduce additional features in early 2016 that will enhance the performance of the PW127M and PW127N engines.
The PW127M, certified in 2007 has a maximum continuous rating of 1953 kW.
PW127 is part of P&W PW100 aircraft engine family, which is a series of 2,000 to 5,000 horsepower range engines.
The new PW127N engines will progressively equip Colombia based Avianca’s ATR fleet throughout 2014 and 2015.
The first ATR 72-600 of Avianca equipped with the engines will be delivered in the coming weeks, and will enable the airline to get better performance at take-off on airports in altitude like their hub in Bogota, Colombia.
