The 737 MAX 200 is based on the 737 MAX 8 airframe, modified to include 11 extra seats, bringing the total seating capacity to 197 and also up to 5 percent lower operating costs than the 737 MAX 8. The increased seating is achieved by incorporating a mid-exit door increasing the exit limit. The airframe is 2.2 meters longer than the rival Airbus A320neo.
Boeing developed the 737 MAX 200 in response to the needs of the fast growing low-cost sector, which is forecasted to account for 35 percent of single-aisle airline capacity by 2033.
The MAX 200s will also be configured with the passenger inspired Boeing Sky Interior, featuring modern sculpted sidewalls and window reveals, LED lighting that enhances, larger pivoting overhead stowage bins and fuel saving winglets.
The 737 MAX is the fourth generation 737 developed from current Boeing 737 Next Generation jetliners and features a 20 per cent lower fuel burn. It will be powered by the CFM International LEAP a high-bypass turbofan engine.
Boeing also announced the European budget airline Ryanair as the launch customer, with agreement to purchase up to 200 aircraft (100 firm & 100 options) worth over $22bn at current list prices. First delivery is scheduled for 2019.
The deal is a major win for Boeing's 737 MAX program, which has booked a total 2,239 orders from 46 customers worldwide, since its launch in 2011.
