Russian Helicopters has delivered the first batch of four upgraded Mi-8AMTSh (Mi-171Sh – export variant) military transport helicopters to Russian Defence Ministry.

The helicopter upgrade was carried at Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant ( UUAP) under a long-term state contract signed in August 2013.

The upgraded Mi-8AMTSh features improved service life and operational capabilities. The time between overhaul has increased to 2,000 hours from 1,500 and service life to 35 years from 25, while operating costs across the life-cycle of the helicopter have been reduced by about 25-30 percent compared to the basic model.
The helicopter features enhanced VK-2500 turboshaft engines and an upgraded and strengthened transmission to provide independent control of hours logged in service and improve the aircraft’s operational efficiency in mountainous terrain and hot climates, and also come with new TA-14 auxiliary power plants that generate improved thrust and power output, as well as modern weapons systems.

The more powerful VK-2500 engine rateed at 2,700 hp replaces the TV3-117VM rated at 2,100 hp.

The latest navigational equipment allows to fly a full range of military missions, including at night with the use of night-vision goggles. The aircraft’s potential capabilities can be significantly expanded by additional equipment for SAR missions and troop drops, and medical equipment to evacuate wounded personnel.
The helicopter can carry up to 36 paratroopers or up to 4 tons of cargo in the cabin or by external sling.

Other features include self-sealing fuel tanks, FLIR system, emergency ditching system, engine-exhaust IR suppressors, flare dispenser, jammer, armoured plate protection for cockpit, vital helicopter systems and aft machine gun operator and explosion protected of fuel tanks.
