Northrop Grumman OpenPod NG podded sensor system
Northrop Grumman unveiled its new OpenPod(TM) Next Generation Podded Sensor Systems which enable affordable sensor swaps on fighter and bomber aircraft, to quickly adapt to the battlespace.

The OpenPod eliminates expensive and time consuming process of changing, integrating or upgrading sensors on a military aircraft for carrying out specific missions.

The system enable maintainers to swap sensors in theater, match the sensors to the mission quickly, giving them flexibility to carry out any missions in reduced turn around time and effort.

The OpenPod(TM) system consists of line-replaceable units and a set of interchangeable sensors that can be swapped out in minutes. Enabled by open architecture principles, OpenPod(TM) is the first of its kind to accommodate a range of sensors with one pod.

OpenPod(TM) eliminates the need for multiple pods, like for targeting, infrared search and track capability (IRST), communication etc.

OpenPod(TM) will be available with targeting and IRST packages at launch, followed by communications, LIDAR, 5th-to-4th generation communications and other options in in the future.

Because the pod allows for sensor changes without modifications to the aircraft or mission computer, OpenPod(TM) can be upgraded independent of the aircraft.

The present Litening targeting pod used by U.S. military and its allies, can be converted to an OpenPod(TM), without any further investment and training.
