Antonov has commenced series production of the new An-178 medium weight transport aircraft which is currently undergoing certification trials.

The multi-role airlifter has won firm order for 10 aircraft from Azerbaijan Airlines with first delivery scheduled to begin in 2018.

Since maiden flight in May 2015, the only prototype have completed 100 test flights with a total duration of 160 flight hours.


In August, loading/unloading of light wheeled military vehicle were completed using three HMMWVs  М1097А2, which will be followed by loading/unloading of containerized and palletized cargoes.

Available in military and civilian versions, the An-178 is capable of carrying a payload of up to 18 tonnes and can operate from any runway, including semi-prepared ones.

Production aircraft certified to the European CS−25 norms, will be powered by two Ivchenko Progress D-436-148FM high bypass turbofan engines featuring increased takeoff thrust, reduced emissions and noise level.

Development of the aircraft which is based on the An-148 regional airliner began in 2010 and is intended mainly to succeed the vintage An-12 turboprop freighter.
