Wreckage of a Swiss Air Force F/A-18 fighter that went missing in the Alps mountain range on Monday afternoon, has been located in the Susten Pass.

The single seat Boeing F/A-18C fighter was one of the two fighters on a training exercise sortie.

The crash site in a steep slope of glacier was located by Army search and rescue helicopters.

Radio contact with the aircraft was lost at 1405 GMT, four minutes after taking off from the Meiringen airbase.

Bad weather and treacherous terrain has hampered the search mission and fate of the pilot is still unknown.

F/A-18 fighter entered Swiss service in 1997, which were license assembled in the country. A total of 34 fighters were procured, including 26 single seat C versions and 8 twin seat trainer D versions.

This is the first crash involving the C version. Earlier the D version have crashed in 1998, 2013 and 2015. With this crash, Swiss fleet now stands at 30 aircraft.
