A surveillance configured Fairchild SA227 Metroliner twin prop aircraft operated by Luxemberg based CAE Aviation crashed shortly after taking off from the Malta International Airport.

The aircraft with civil registration N577MX was contracted by French Customs for surveillance missions over Africa.

The all French crews consisting three defense ministry officials and two civilian contractors were killed in the crash.

The aircraft was heading towards Libyan coast to monitor illegal migrants leaving Libya’s lawless coasts.
