Airbus Defense and Space successfully completed maiden flight of an improved A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft.

The variant features a number of enhancements including structural modifications and aerodynamic improvements as a part of Airbus's continuous product improvement strategy.

The three-hour flight took place on 30 September and the crew reported that the aircraft performed in line with expectations.

These new enhancements reduce fuel burn by up to one percent. The aircraft also feature upgraded avionics computers and enhanced military systems.

First delivery of this standard aircraft is expected in 2018.

Based on the Airbus A330 commercial airliner, the A330 MRTT can double as a aerial refueling tanker or as an troop and cargo transport aircraft.

It can carry up to 111 tonnes / 245,000 lb of fuel in its wings. As a pure transport aircraft, it can carry up to 300 troops, or a payload of up to 45 tonnes/99,000 lb. It can also easily be converted to accommodate up to 130 stretchers for Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) missions.

A total of 51 A330 MRTTs have been ordered by 10 nations of which 28 have been delivered.
