The Kongsberg has carried out the first long range flight test of its Joint Strike Missile (JSM), being developed to arm Norwegian F-35 stealth fighters.

The JSM was launched from an Edwards Air Force-based F-16 fighter over the Utah Test and Training Range west of Salt Lake City, United States.

Designed for internal carriage on the F-35, the test demonstrated safe separation from the aircraft performing a number of challenging flight manoeuvres, long range while continuously alternating speed and altitude, unique capabilities for this class of strike missiles.

Development and qualification of the missile will be completed in 2018, in tune with Norwegian F-35 service entry.

With its anti-ship and land attack capability, JSM will enabling the F-35 to engage well-defended targets from standoff ranges.

The 4m long missile weighs 416 kg (912 lb) and is powered by a turbofan engine.
