An Ilyushin Il-18 turboprop passenger aircraft operated by Russian Defense Ministry has crashed in Bulunsky district of Yakutia.

Sixteen of the 39 passengers including 7 crew members were seriously injured when the aircraft crashed while attempting an emergency landing.

The aircraft was carrying out an scheduled flight from Kansk Airport to Tiksi Airport. It crashed some 30 km short of Tiksi at 04:45 local time.

First flown in 1957, the Il-18 was one of the best Soviet era aircraft that was known for its durability.

Currently in military and limited civilian use, around 700 of these were produced until 1985.

Powered by four Ivchenko AI-20M turboprop engines, the Il-18 can be configured to seat up to 120 passengers.
