One of the new ICBM revealed during the parade |
The deterrence parade clearly send message to United States and its allies in the region against any pre-emptive strikes targeting the country's military capabilities.
On Wednesday, Japanese Navy warships had joined the U.S. aircraft carrier Carl Vinson and its strike group which is heading to the Korean peninsula in a show of force mission to deter North Korea from any further nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
The parade revealed two unknown, untested canisterised intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) possibly under development. One of them resembled the the Russian Yars ICBM on a 16x16 Transporter Erector Launcher (TEL) vehicle. The other was on a wheeled trailer platform.
Pukguksong-1 SLBM |
The Pukguksong-1 submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM) was paraded on trailer, which was successfully test launched in Feb 2017 flying about 500 km and reached Japan's air defense identification zone.
The missile is the first sea-based deterrent of North Korea that can threaten a U.S. pre-emptive strike with a counter strike. The missile is not operational as currently North Korean People's Navy lacks a submarine equipped with Nuclear/Air Independent propulsion system to effectively use the missile.
